Water, Water Everywhere and Other Random News

Water
Well, it happened again. Lauren and David's house flooded. Yep, again. It flooded last year before Carsyn was born. A hose in the utility room popped off and caused some damage to the floors, some sheetrock, and some paint. Bless their hearts, they only thought it was hard then.

Imagine now with a nine-month-old baby to take care of--the house taken over by heaters/dehumidifiers--the kitchen, living room, and dining room having stood under water for hours...yep, it's bad.

But it could be worse, and they have found so many things to be thankful for. We have enjoyed their being around our house more, and the house is fixable. Pray for a quick recovery of their living space; all families need their own.

Gymnastics
We traveled to Huntsville the last weekend of Spring Break for Ashley's state meet in Prep Op 6 Gold. she did great, and we are looking forward to regionals  in April. More about that coming soon!

Sewing
Sooooo much sewing has been done over the break! Thread therapy has been good for the soul. It's a blessing to see something cute, useful, or especially meaningful emerge from a pile of material, elastic, lace, and buttons. Fun, fun, fun!

School (Or Not)
SIX (6) Mondays of regular school left!!!! SIX!!! I can't stand it...if I talk about it too much I may explode from spontaneous combustion!!!

:(
Thursday Casey and Travis are moving their mobile home to their own land. I am at the same time so happy for them and so sad. Their home was Lauren and David's first home and has been behind our house for almost seven years. We were so happy that Casey and Travis could enjoy it here as well. We will miss seeing them walk up across the yard, waving as they come in from work, and being a part of our little community on the hill. We wish them many happy years at their new home place, and promise to always leave the light on if they need to come "home."

Where is home? Home is where the heart can laugh without shyness. Home is where the heart's tears can dry at their own pace. ~ Vernon Baker

Home is the place where when you have to go there, They have to take you in. ~ Robert Frost

Home is the bottom line of life, the anvil upon which attitudes and convictions are hammered out the single most influential force in our earthly existence. No price tag can adequately reflect its value. ~ Charles Swindoll

Not My Kind of Cartoon...

Spring Break has been filled so far with lots of sugar, naps, baby food, and a very sweet helper. Grace and Carsyn have been staying with me during the day. That is complete and total justification for the fact that my laundry is behind, my dishes are piling up, and the living room floor looks like a daycare explosion. We are all much happier on the golf cart, on the swing, playing with toys, or cheering/dancing/singing (Carsyn and I are a rapt audience for Grace's performances.) So fun.

For years (6 to be exact) we have subscribed to Noggin because it is "preschool on tv." Their shows are adorable. Some of the kids' favorites have been Handy Manny, Franklin, Olivia, Oswald, and the Spanish-speaking adventursome duo of Dora and Diego. But now the "older" Grace feels that she has outgrown some of these shows -- even though I, an adult, still learn from them. We do not allow shows like Spongebob or others that are disrespectful or condone bad behavior. Grace agrees that if we say "No" to a show, it's automatically off limits.

So Monday, in the midst of feeding Carsyn and changing diapers and chasing down pacifiers, Grace asked if she could find something else to watch. She hit the guide button and scrolled down. Reaching one channel, she said, "What about this one, ZiZi?" It was King of the Hill. "I don't know, Grace. Do you get to watch that at home?" She couldn't remember, so I told her to press Select and let me see for a second. Oh. My. Goodness...my thoughts about cartoon shows changed in the next 8 seconds.

The show was cast with animated cartoon characters. Remember that we clicked on it in mid show. A couple walked into the view, the woman in the pair talking about how getting married was really just an attempt not to make the preacher and God mad with their actions.

In the next scene, a woman emerges from her baptism in the river.  She's all excited about the "change" in herself.
The onlooker doubts her change and says it "takes more than a few preachy words and a dunk in the river to change some things."
Of course we changed the channel. However, the feeling of complete disgust and an overwhelmingly sickening feeling stayed behind long after.

Who do these writers think would be watching cartoons at 10:00 in the morning? I can't think of a good reason that any adult should even have the time to waste in such a way. Imagine the damage done to the minds of young children by having this garbage fed to them through the brain drain.

I am not totally against television--as I am not against the internet or cellphones or facebook or video games. Any of these things can be a wonderful way to learn new information, research topics, keep up with the people in our world and family, and entertain ourselves. But this seconds-long clip made me sure of this: adults MUST monitor what is playing on the home television. It is no less important than making sure internet time is supervised and monitored or that video games and movies are suitable for the player/watcher.

How in the world can we know what to watch/do? This is the answer that comes to my mind:

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
Philippians 4:8

Yep, that'll do it.

Good Things Happening...

What a beautiful weekend for a birthday at the river!! Vicki's birthday was this weekend, and we had a great time celebrating. Lauren was in charge of the cake, and she came through with flying colors--guess what shape? Just guess---flip flops!! Cute as a button, let me tell you! We had a small hiccup--somehow Lauren and the cake maker failed to discuss flavor, so what was supposed to be a yummy chocolate cake with chocolate icing turned out to be a to-die-for yellow cake with chocolate icing -- get this--complete with vanilla wafer "sand" and fondant starfish and sea shells. Awesome...just awesome!

Grace and Carsyn played so well. We put the little pool out and let Carsyn get in. Goodness, we have GOT to get rid of that diaper rash! So, we cheated a bit (we put warm water from the house in and cooled it down a bit with the water hose.) She had a ball! She didn't take a nap all day, but she had a ball. Lauren is becoming a pro at timing...just as they were preparing to leave, Carsyn was OUT like a light. Robbie and I stayed for the night. Grace had not slept all day either, and after supper she was gone...out...sawing logs. Cutest thing she said...
Grace: ZiZi, where are you going to sleep?
Me: In the room with PopPop.
Grace: Why don't y'all move your stuff in my room and let Mama and Daddy sleep back there?
Me: Everybody's stuff is already in place. Why would we move it?
Grace: When I wake up, I just want to be looking at you!

How sweet is that?

After we got everything packed up and cleaned up Sunday, we were on our way home. We got a bite to eat and stopped to check on a tire for Josh's boat trailer. Josh came back to the house to help clean fish -- 25 catfish! I headed to the den of stitches for some thread therapy. Casey was not far behind, and we were cruising...4 minky dot dresses in record time. While I was looking up some sewing stuff on the computer, I found my mission. I am SOOOOO excited! I was looking up the arm depth for pillowcase dresses, and I ran across this link. I can absolutely do this!! And I'll take all the help I can get! These little dresses can be made with pillowcases or a yard of fabric. How easy is that??? I'm going to be on the lookout for fabric and/or pillowcases to use. Want to help? Let me know. A roll or ribbon, a yard of fabric, a pillowcase...any of these can be used to make a little girl happy. I'm also going to do the britches for boys...making little shorts so the little boys won't be left out. Ahhhh...I can't wait to get started!!!

Technically Speaking...

Disclaimer: This post will cover a LOT of ground...just fair warning :)

There has been so much to go on this week...goodness, I don't even know where to start! Lots of things this week don't match up with what I would normally think or do (hence the title).

1. Carsyn went to school with me some this week. Technically speaking, she is not a CCA student. That didn't stop the kids from falling in love with her, or the teachers from fighting over her, or Grace from getting some sneaky sugar at the water fountain.

2. Early this week, Grace and I arrived at school...the first ones on campus...to find that the school had been "pranked." Looked a lot more like vandalism to me. Poor Grace -- she was the first one to see it and it really scared her. Desks turned over and tied together; garbage scattered everywhere; cups of water all over the hall; lockers opened and tied together. Technically speaking, no huge damage was done. Realistically speaking, the teachers and most other students found the whole thing rude, crude, socially unacceptable, and a very literal insult to those of us who work for very nearly nothing.

3. Friday Kandace called to tell me her new baby, Landen (5 months old) had been transferred to Children's Hospital in Birmingham. She needed help with Dylan, Daniel, and Kaylee, and she was worried about Landen. Technically speaking, Landen is not my grandchild. He is, however, the brother of my babies. How in the world could I not care about him and his family? Thankfully, he is better tonight. My prayer is that he will continue to improve.

4. Little Miss CCA was Saturday night, and it couldn't come a moment too soon for Grace! She was GORGEOUS!! There were 44 contestants, and let me tell you, nobody could have paid me to be a judge! Grace had practiced every day and was just so excited to get to dress up and get on stage. Technically speaking, she did not place (because the judges were silly, she said).  However, in our eyes, she was absolutely the winner!!

5. I woke up with a start at 6:18 this morning. Technically speaking, it was 7:18 because the time changed last night. And I was supposed to pick the kids up at 8:30. And it is almost an hour's drive. And my gas tank was empty. And now my checking account is too! Gas prices are a killer!

6. Kandace called me as I was returning from church--another emergency in their family. Chyenne was at her daddy's in McKenzie and he had been admitted to the hospital for emergency surgery. The simplest solution was for me to go get her. Technically speaking, she is not my grandchild, but we are ZiZi and PopPop to her as well. She had a ball driving the golf cart, playing ball, and jumping on the trampoline. I think it made Robert's kids feel better too. They are a little misput with their mama being gone.

7. Kaylee has been asking to go to bed since 4:30. Technically speaking, that is not an appropriate bedtime. She's sound asleep after a good, fun, peaceful bath (she doesn't get many of those here).

8. Tomorrow is Monday, the start of a new work week and the last week before Spring Break (my fingers actually DANCED over those keys). Technically speaking, I usually hate Mondays. But I like any Monday that signifies the last week before a well-deserved break.

9. I have sewing to do...another Etsy sale! Yeah!! Technically speaking, that is another job. However, I look at it as an opportunity for what I happily called "thread therapy."

10. Technically speaking, I have the most wonderful family in the world. That does not mean they don't mess up sometimes. That just simply allows an opportunity for some kind of penance...groveling, sackcloth and ashes, appropriate gifts/chores/make up work...technically speaking, of course.

Rambling Randomosity...

--Yesterday I saw that a young mother and her child were killed in a car accident south of Troy. The mom died on site; the baby, 15 months old, was air lifted to UAB and died there. My heart breaks for the husband/daddy, for her parents, and for all her family and friends. I have not been able to get the accident off my mind...just too close to home right  now. I am praying for our family.

--Carsyn is going to be going to school with me a good bit. The kids and faculty LOVE her -- and she loves them as long as I'm not visible :)  I don't know how many times I said, "If you want her, just take her and walk away." She had a ball, but I'm pretty sure she was worn out at the end of the day.

--I shipped my first Etsy store sale today, and I'm nervous!! I know that's weird, but for everything else I've made, I've been able to see the person's reaction when it was presented. I won't this one, but I sure hope she likes it!! I sold another outfit today--a onesie with ruffles around the legs. It's so cute!!! Just think, clothes made by me being worn by children in Kentucky and New York!

--Casey is having sewing withdrawals!!! She's coming tomorrow night to help me. There's just something about sewing; after a while you just NEED to hear those machines going! It's thread therapy :)

--Grace's pageant is this weekend. She is soooo excited! I hope she has loads of fun--she's already the winner for us :) She told me the other day when she got in the truck with curly hair, "I had to sleep in a sock bun last night. You just have to do these things when you are 6 and in a pageant."

--Dylan and Kaylee have been sick, but they are feeling better. Thank you, Lord, for answered prayers!!

--I am seriously concerned that Robbie may be irreparably addicted to the DIY network (free for our viewing pleasure this month). We have watched more bath, kitchen, and yard renovations that I would have thought possible. I'll certainly let you know if he starts using any of the ideas on THIS house.

--Three days in a row we are going to bed with NO dirty dishes in the house and NO dirty clothes in the house! Woooo hooooo!! I'm so excited!!!!

--The basketball goal is UP!!! Dylan will be BEYOND excited!! Robbie cheated a tad...he poured the sackrete (sp??) in the hole and let the rain do the job of turning it to solid rock. We'll see how that turns out.

--Cute stuff from gymnastics tonight:
Alyssa-- Miss Lisa, my skin's still coming off and mama won't take me to that room.
Me (forgetting I had jokingly mentioned this one time)--What room, Alyssa?
Alyssa -- The nursing room that stays open all night.
Me-- Oh, Alyssa, you probably don't need the emergency room. Your mom's a nurse.
Alyssa -- Well, she works in the nursing home with old people and she's 35, so I don't think she knows    much.

--This is one of the best snacks I've had lately...especially on bbq chicken day (should be an illegal lunchroom food, as should pizza, corndogs, chili dogs, and spaghetti)

The Greatest Husband in the World

That's what I have...the world's greatest husband. And you know what makes it even more wonderful? He doesn't know it! Wouldn't that be awful to live with? A husband who constantly brings up how great he is? But that's not Robbie...

Every night he fixes supper while I work at the gym. I'm not talking about sandwiches and chips here. Pork chops and scalloped potatoes...grilled chicken...pancakes and bacon...it's always good! He checks the truck when I get home and goes to buy gas if I need it. He washes clothes...he pays bills.

This week has NOT been my week. March 1 is almost as hard as February 25th. We had a babysitting turnover and a gym turnover. I felt like I had a sign on that said "Kick me while I'm down!" But today was one of those days that I could just really think about how good Robbie is to me, and how good my life really is.

We got up this morning and, without discussing it, began cleaning. Robbie got breakfast started and cleaned out the refrigerator. I washed dishes and clothes. When we were done eating and doing dishes, Robbie asked what I needed to do. To be honest, I hesitated. I'm away so much, and work even at night. Finally I told him that I had some sewing I needed to do. No problem!! So I went to sew and left him to make himself happy. Imagine how surprised I was to come back in about lunch to find he had washed, dried, and folded clothes, finished the basketball goal, fed the dog, and remeasured the house for wood floors and tile. The man is amazing!!

Even more surprising...he was ready for us to go look at flooring again! Wow...two times in a year, and it's only March. Will wonders never cease? Talking about it as we rode, we decided to stop in Greenville and look at a small building supply store. We were pleasantly surprised to find a color we really liked. We decided that Robbie could check in Montgomery Monday, and did a little shopping and ate lunch in town.

Back home...back to sew. I know, I know...but I LOVE it. I had walked out to the den of thread and did not even notice it had started to rain REALLY hard. Then my phone rang. "Call me when you get ready to come home and I'll come get you." That's what Robbie said. How sweet is that? Yep, he is definitely the greatest husband in the world!

Want to see what I did?

For Carsyn  because, of course, she has no clothes :)
 My first etsy sale!!
 Cute little outfit for Grace.
These were actually made last week, but I took the picture today. Are they not the CUTEST little shoes??
